RACE DAY! Rock N Sole Half Marathon in Milwaukee.
Official result: 13.1 miles in 1:39:15. 7:35 AP.
5K: 23:56 (7:39 pace)
10K: 47:10 (7:36 pace)
15K: 1:09:31 (7:28 pace)
Finish: 1:39:15 (7:35 pace)
Pace felt easy through 3. (I turned off the 1 mile splits on my watch and just hit the Lap button when I crossed each mile marker.) 7:47, 7:45, 7:30.
There was a slight uphill and downhill on Mile 4, then over and down the Hoan Bridge. I dropped back from the 1:40 pace group on the downhill and didn't catch up again til the steep uphill, about 2-3 miles later. 7:11, 7:20, 8:04, 7:37 (hit Lap button maybe 5 seconds late). I took another Gu around Mile 5.
I kept thinking I'd make a move somewhere here to drop down to 7:15 pace, but I couldn't figure out how I'd survive at that pace. I hit the turn around at ~Mile 9 and started picking it up, but a headwind appeared off the lake and I dropped behind a group to draft after .25 miles. At Mile 11 I was starting to feel the lactate build up in my legs, Mile 12 I felt like dying, and Mile 13 I wanted it to be over. I pushed past the 1:40 pace group just past Mile 12 to push it home. I took another Gu around mile 10.
7:38, 7:39, 7:29, 7:33, 7:25, then :43 for the last .11 (6:38 pace). My watch had me at 13.11, so I must have run the tangents pretty well.
Results: 86th of 2,189 OA, 81st of 979 Men, 8th in 30-35 AG. At worst that's top 7%, at best it's top 4%, which feels good. According to the Jack Daniels' calculator, the heat today (70-76 degrees and sunny) likely slowed me by 9-11 seconds per mile. That would put me at at 1:36.
